I haven't shared much about my writing career, because, well, I've only made $17 as a freelancer. I have (what I think is) quality work out at some of the top children's magazines, and believe I have found my calling as a poet.
Now, onto my "win." I follow a blog called Help! I Need a Publisher! because you know I need a publisher (and an agent for that matter). Recently, the author hosted a writing competition based on a picture. I entered a poem and found out today that I am a highly-commended runner up! Check out my poem (I'm Jennifer de Groot) and the positive feedback here. I think I win a crabbit bag. I'll let you know what that is when I get it!

I'm so jealous! I've always wanted to freelance but have never really started. I think I made $5 back in the day (like 4 years ago) for a few pieces I wrote, but I never saw them published. How did you get started?

ReplyDeleteGood question! Thanks for the encouragement. I started by telling myself I'm a writer. Then, I started finding websites that allow new writers (blissfullydomestic.com) and started writing. That only made me $2 and was stressful having to write a piece each month, but it helped me get a little more exposure.
To start, study your markets (read where you want to be published) and figure out what made each piece work. Then, write, write, write. It's never too late to get going! - Jen
